This term is derived from the confusing and inaccurate nature of the information being communicated. During the American Civil War, wires were strung from tree to tree to communicate information from the battlefield. While the transmission was so inaccurate that any rumour was said to come from such sources, it was also much faster than the formal communications system, and hence was more impactful.
